Okaikoi South MP bemoans poor waste management in Accra

Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South Constituency, Hon Ahmed Arthur has blamed the inefficient waste management situation in the Metropolise on the recent waste management re-zoning undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

Hon Ahmed said the re-zoning exercise in the metropolitan was one major decision which he believes was not well thought through.

He has therefore appealed to the authorities to step in immediate to deal with the situation as the onset of the rain could worsen the current waste situation especially in the various markets.

The market women at the Kaneshie Market in an interview with Ghanamps.gov.gh blamed the insanitary conditions there on the negligence of waste management companies assigned to collect waste in the market.

They appealed to the government to ensure proper sanitation in the market because they were charged daily for that purpose.

The traders noted that it was very disgusting the stench that comes out from four overflowing refuse containers in the market not to even talk of the waste liquid discharged from them. “This is unheard of, knowing very well this is where we market farm produce to people” a trader said.

Irrespective of the health implications, trader and buyers busily go about their business. And even though they said they are worried about the situation, they have no option than  to display their wares from cooked foods, fruits, and vegetables and other foodstuff around the overflowing wastes.

Mrs. Anita Mensah, one of the traders said she wonders if officials see the mess in the market, because they pay everyday to the tax collectors and the assembly issues ticket on the monies they pay. “So if it is about money, why can’t they use the money to settle the waste collectors on time so they can also deliver”, she added.
