ECOWAS Parliament holds 2nd Ordinary Session virtually

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament on Wednesday January 13, 2021 started a second extra Ordinary Session in line with the Community calendar, to consider and give parliamentary opinion on the Community budget.

The Community budget which is proposed and adopted by the Administration and Finance Commission (AFC) was initially slated to hold in person at Abuja, the seat of Parliament. However, following the reality of the second wave of the SARS-COVID-2 pandemic, the Bureau of Parliament had to approve the Session to be held virtually on from Wednesday, 13 to Tuesday, 19 January, 2021.

The Extra Ordinary Session would examine the draft 2021 consolidated budget of the Community and consider the draft strategic plan of the fifth Legislature as well as the Parliamentary work of activities.

As provided in the Supplementary Act on December, 2016 on the enhancement of the powers of the Community Parliament, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean Kassi Brou would present to the plenary an up-to-date report on the level of implementation of the Community work.

A statement by the Community Parliament Communication Division noted that the President of the court of justice, Justice Edward Amoako Asante would deliver a goodwill address to the plenary.

Aware of the role of an elected Parliament in facilitating the participation of the people in their governance, the Speaker of the Community Parliament, Rt, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis at the occasion of the inauguration of the current legislature in Niamey in March, 2020 identified the election of MPs by direct universal suffrage as the flagship political program of this legislature’s mandate.
