Haruna commend Osei-Kyei for his work towards IGIs to ensure they are better

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has commended his colleague the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu for his hard work in ensuring that Independent Governance Institutions (IGIs) function better in our democratic journey.

According to him it would be perfect if he is given additional responsibility of making a case for the IGIs at the cabinet. Working with him as Majority Leader, he has shown enough commitment towards these Institutions functioning well.

“Working with him these few years I don’t doubt his concern for these Institutions to work efficiently, but my worry is when he turns himself to be the Public Relations Officer for the Electoral Commission”.

He further pointed out that he accepts the difficulty of separating the state from government. “I have fundamental difficulties working with the Majority Leader, but in the review of our Standing Orders, he has demonstrated his commitment to strengthening and increasing resources for the IGIs”.

Mr. Iddrisu pointed out that he accompanied the Majority Leader when he visited the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and at a higher level when he urged leadership of this country to give the IGIs their due to perform.

He made this remark at a forum organised by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in Accra on Friday June 26 2020 on the theme, “Independent Governance Institutions and the 2020 elections in Ghana some reflections”.

Again, he said there are some critical threats to the nation’s democracy: vigilantism, violence and moneytisation are worrying as they undermine the country’s democracy.
