“If population quota is not looked at we might have five hundred constituencies”---Osei-Kyei

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has cautioned that as a country if we do not take critical look at population quota system where in every ten years because of increase in population new constituency are created, we may end up having too many lawmakers.

According him in the next ten to twenty years, if care is not taken, the current two hundred and seventy five constituencies might jump to either four to five hundred constituencies.

He further pointed out that we do not necessary have to create additional constituencies, it is not acceptable anywhere and cannot be justifiable. “This cannot go on forever, the constitution provides for redrawing of electoral boundaries, but when population migrate to other regions, that may not necessary mean that we have to create additional boundaries”.

Mr. Osei-Kyei made this remark at a forum organised by his Ministry that brought together Independent Governance Institutions where the Electoral Commission made a presentation on the topic, “Toward and effective electoral management in Ghana the 2020 election in perspective”.

He expressed worry about the confusion created in the minds of Ghanaian following the springing up of political parties that tends not to be national in nature with offices only in Accra, and called for measures to address this.

“We need to come up with a firm determination of this as the EC should lead this crusade, they have said in 2013 they went to the districts to know how many political parties existed but could not finish their exercise, we need to know how many political parties exist and if they are  national in character”.
