Minister lament over abuse of state media during elections

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Mr. Osei-Kyei- Mensah-Bonsu at a forum looking at Independent Governance Institutions and the 2020 elections has lamented over how political party’s abuse state media by not paying for the space afforded them during general elections.

According to him he is aware of what happened in 2016 where the State broadcaster GBC and GTV afforded political parties space, “how much did the political parties pay to GBC and GTV?”

He further pointed out that it is most revealing that in spite of the massive resort to state media like Daily Graphic, Ghanaian Times, GTV and GBC much was not paid and added that we should not deceive ourselves as Ghanaians.

“We should be forthright with ourselves, what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong”.

In a related development, he noted that as a nation what should attract our attention ahead of this year’s election is vigilantism in our politics with the enactment of a law to that effect and how to bring a closure on the issue with the President assenting to the law passed.

“We have to resolve to apply the law in the upcoming elections, and if we are able to do it, it would impact positively to subsequent elections. In my constituency, previously people mounted motorbikes moving from one polling station to another trying to destroy the election equipment of the EC in the presence of the security agencies”.

He urged the EC to act in tandem with the security agencies in the upcoming EC registration exercise to ensure that elections would not be disrupted as the nation cannot live with it.

He urged that going forward, the two major political parties should come together on this issue and there should be no space for anybody in authority to intervene for anybody on any matter if the person is found a culprit.
