Ranking member on the Tade and Industry Committee, Michael Okyere Baafi has admonished the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agro-Business to reconsider their decision of canceling the one district, one factory policy and rather focus on a transition process rather than immediately ending the policy.

According to him there was no policy to replace the 1d1f in the budget presented in March this year; rather there was a mention of feed industry policy and insufficient amount was allocated to that policy.

At a press conference in Parliament, he indicated that he raised the issue on the floor of the House. “We have 322 1d1f companies at various stages of implementation, 169 companies are fully completed, and they are operational. So you cannot just wake up and say these companies would not know their fate; that is not good for the country, that the policy has been abrogated that is not right. It means that those companies that have already been established because of 1d1f, what would be the future of these businesses? He queried.

He asserted that the previous government introduced this policy and it has been running for six years, “you cannot just say it should be abrogated – there is the need for a transitional period where we can say this project is already in operation; you can run it until the end of the year or until the end of next year so that after next year you cannot get any incentive from government.

He argued that companies have invested so much in these companies and they are either green or brown business – they are existing businesses that were going through problems and needed support to be resuscitated to run.

“We have spent one point two billion cedis in these businesses; and you just come that it is canceled. Government should come out with a plan for them to prepare and know what to do; the 24 -Hour Economy is not coming out now and the companies are calling us to speak on their behalf”.
