Parliament on Thursday approved a waiver on taxes and levies amounting to 7,413,611million dollars on goods and services relating to the execution of the grant agreement between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA) and Ghana for the rehabilitation of the national trunk road N8.

The road plays an important role in economic activities in Ghana and it is the main link for the Accra – Kumasi and western economic block of the country which is considered to be the golden triangle of Ghana’s economy.

It is also a major link between major production areas and the country’s port in Takoradi and Tema.

However the poor state of the road is adversely affecting economic activities.

Presenting the report of the Finance Committee, the Chairman, and Hon James Klutse Avedzi said that the committee realized that the Assin Praso- Asante Bekwai section of the N8 road is worse affected.

The proposed rehabilitation work on this part of the road is therefore is important to promote transportation of goods and farm products from production areas to the port and other parts of the country.

The chairman further stated that the project seeks to rehabilitate a 60 kilometer road from Assin Praso to Asante Bekwai including the reconstruction of Assin Praso Bridge and other related works.

The road will be a two way, two lane single carriages with mechanically stabilized crush rock based and asphaltic concrete wearing course.

The project will further provide two climbing lane for slow moving trucks at the mountainous sections.

As part of the project the total of 127 culverts will also be replaced.
The project is expected to be completed in December this year.
