Election has commenced in the Akwatia by-election to elect a new Member of Parliament for the constituency following the demise of the late Ernest Kumi which left the seat vacant.
It is a tight race between the ruling National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo and the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu with both sides hopeful of winning the seat.
Ernest Kumi won the seat in the 2024 general elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party despite opposition from the National Democratic Congress resulting in a number of legal battles until his demise reducing the Minority’s number from 88 to 87.
As such the NPP is keen on retaining the seat while the NDC thinks it is time to leverage on the goodwill the government is enjoying from the citizens to annex the seat to increase their number in parliament.
Over 50,000 registered voters in the constituency are expected to take part in this by-election to decide who represents them in Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has beefed up security with 5,500 personnel to ensure the smooth running of the election.
