The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Kwame Asare Obeng has petitioned the Rt. Hon Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin for the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee Abena Osie-Asare to be removed following her public defense of the former Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu when he refused to disclose his age.
He asserts that Abena Osie-Asare’s behaviour raises serious doubts about her commitment to transparency and accountability and morally indefensible for Osei Asare to preside over a committee that demands accountability from new officials on matters that occurred under her direct watch as former deputy finance minister. Additionally, it compromises the impartiality of the PAC but also diminishes public trust in Parliament’s oversight role.
And her association with the Ministry of Finance during the tenure of Ken Ofori-Atta – a period defined by reckless borrowing, fiscal indiscipline, and multiple controversial contracts, undermines the credibility of her leadership.
In a statement, he noted that, contracts like, “Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) contract, the ECG-Beijing Jao Loss reduction agreement, and the service of Ghana Auto Limited ambulance procurement deal, all of which are currently under investigation by the office of the Special Prosecutor “ are examples of some of the issues that undermines her leadership role.
