Parliament on Tuesday approved a GHS 1.5 billion budget for the Ministry of Transport, covering expenditures through to the end of 2026. The allocation is intended to support the Ministry’s initiatives aimed at upgrading national transport infrastructure and improving service delivery.

The approval followed the presentation of a report by Mr. Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee.

During the session, Transport Minister Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe outlined ongoing modernization efforts at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), including the rollout of new vehicle registration plates designed to boost operational efficiency.

Contributing to the debate, Mr. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Committee and NPP MP for Akim Swedru, raised concerns about the railway sector, highlighting outstanding salary arrears of approximately GHS 34 million owed to railway workers.

Separately, Mr. Patrick Yaw Boamah, NPP MP for Okaikwei Central, questioned a proposal to raise the passenger service charge from GHS 5 to GHS 100.

In response, Minister Nikpe clarified that the passenger service charge for domestic flights has remained unchanged at GHS 5 since 2014 and would not be increased. He explained that the proposed adjustment applies only to external flights, with new rates set at $100 for economy class and $150 for business class passengers, subject to the provisions of the Fees and Charges Act.
