Ahead of Guinea’s Presidential elections on December 28, 2025, a member of the Guinea Bissau delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Manuel Irenio Do N. Lopes has appealed to military leader General Mamady Doumbouya who has expressed interest to contest the presidential election to leave the uniform.
According to him, everybody knows that he is a talented soldier but so far as he has decided to contest the election, he must take off the military uniform and contest in the presidential elections as a civilian.
In an interview, he noted that, the suffering of the people of Guinea Bissau can be affected if Guinea Conakry does not get it right democratically; “so, if they are not safe, we would not be safe. We have defended that country; their people are my people, we are the same people, there is no way that I cannot defend them”.
Furthermore, we have the same root with people of Guinea, we are one, we did not have Guinea Bissau or Guinea separately, it took the Portugues and French to separate us. And I believe and trust that the election in that Country will be fair; we do not know who would win in that election, but I hope for the stability of that country and the vision General Mamady Doumbouya has for that nation. I trust him and I pray to God that he wins the December 28, 2025, elections for the sake of stability between Guinea and Guinea Bissau, he added.
According to him, Guinea is the father of their independence, their nationality and identity, and he would not like to see that Country in disarray as that will affect him.
“Again, today a lot of people do not know the story of Guinea especially the younger generation in Guinea Bissau. We have to tell them not to make a mess of that country because we had our freedom because of that country and everything should be done to respect the democratic elections and process as we had it in the past”.
