The President is expected to provide a candid assessment of the economy and outline solutions to challenges inherited from the previous administration.

President John Dramani Mahama will present a frank and honest assessment of Ghana’s economy when he delivers the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on Thursday, according to a senior government official.

Deputy Roads and Highways Minister, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, stated that the President’s address will offer a transparent account of the country’s fiscal health and the steps his administration is taking to address ongoing challenges.

“President Mahama, being who he is, will give a correct account of the state of the state. And he will do so sincerely, and he will do so with the humility that he is noted for,” Mr. Suhuyini said.

Focus on Economic Recovery and Inherited ‘Mess’

The Deputy Minister emphasized that the President’s speech will focus on sector-specific solutions to problems he claims were created by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

“That will include the performance of the economy and the solutions that he has provided to clear the mess that the NPP created in that sector,” Mr. Suhuyini stated. “That is the only reason why President Mahama decided to return to be president, so that he could resolve the challenges that they left behind.”

Mr. Suhuyini suggested that the NPP’s recent reluctance to engage with macroeconomic discussions is a direct result of the government’s success in stabilizing the economy.

He pointed to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as a key example of the difficulties inherited by the current administration.

“For the first time ever in the history of this country, we were unable to service our debt, and pensioners had to end up with haircuts,” he noted. According to the Deputy Minister, the NPP is now avoiding the topic because “His Excellency President Mahama, within a year, has fixed that problem.”

Mr. Suhuyini added that the President’s address will also highlight interventions in the struggling cocoa sector, outlining the solutions being rolled out to revive it.

President Mahama is scheduled to deliver the address to Parliament tomorrow, fulfilling a constitutional requirement to outline his government’s achievements.
