The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Hon. Abena Osei Asare, has issued a strong warning to District and Municipal Assemblies against using funds allocated to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) for emergency activities.
She made the call during the PAC’s second zonal public hearing in Kumasi, where the 2024 Auditor-General’s report was being reviewed.
During the proceedings, the committee noted that the misapplication of funds remains a common infraction among many assemblies. In some cases, money set aside for PWDs was used to organize events like Independence Day celebrations or to pay retirement packages for assembly members.
The Ranking Member of the committee, Samuel Atta Mills, who chaired the sitting, ordered that all funds taken from MPs’ and PWDs’ accounts be reimbursed within 30 days.
He noted that MPs are not signatories to these accounts, meaning their allocations are often used without their knowledge.
