The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has challenged the Municipal Chief Executive for the Birim Central Municipality, Solomon Kusi Brako, to seek legal redress in court if he feels maligned by allegations that he is facilitating illegal mining (galamsey) in the area.
Mr Acquah stated that he has consistently accused the MCE of enabling galamsey operations in Akim Oda, adding that the lack of response from the government is why he continues to call on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the media to investigate the matter.
“I don’t know why this time round he decided to go to the gods. The courts are there. I thought he would have to go to the courts because he feels I’m maligning him. If he decides not to go to the courts but to the gods, I have my evidence—I did not make the allegations out of a vacuum,” he said.
The MP affirmed that he has petitioned the government and the relevant ministers, but no action has been taken so far.
He argued that if the same crime of facilitating illegal mining sent Wontumi to 20 years in prison, then the government is currently covering for its own people. “I’m saying now that the government is covering its own,” he stated.
Mr Acquah added that Ghana’s constitution makes no provision for divine judgment, and as a Christian, he believes the appropriate forum for the dispute is the courtroom. “But if he has gone to the gods, let the gods judge,” he emphasised.
