The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that its officers attempted to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation.
In a statement released by the Office, EOCO explained that the attempted arrest followed the MP’s failure to honour two previous invitations to assist with the investigation in February 2026.
According to the statement, the situation escalated during the operation, forcing officers to abort the arrest after assessing that a “counter action would have endangered public safety.”
The Office also revealed that it has identified two individuals who are alleged to have actively intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape. EOCO stated that the conduct of these individuals is currently being assessed, and lawful steps will be taken against them.
Parliamentary Sanctuary and Legal Privileges
The statement noted that Hon. Baffour subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, despite the House being on recess.
EOCO emphasized that while it recognizes and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament, “Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.”
The Office assured the public that it will not take any step inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or constitutional protections.
Investigation Remains Active
EOCO stated that the investigation remains active and that it will carefully review the circumstances surrounding today’s incident, including available video evidence, to guide its next steps.
“The Office remains determined to discharge its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law, and the institutional privileges of Parliament,” the statement concluded.
