Accra, Ghana – The Minority in Parliament has strongly condemned an alleged attempt by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The condemnation came during a press briefing on Tuesday, held in the wake of an emergency recall of Parliament. Addressing the media, Rev. Ntim Fordjour voiced the Minority’s outrage over the incident, which he stated occurred on September 23rd.
“We strongly condemn the attempted arrests on 23rd of September of the Honourable Member for Manhyia South MP, by officers of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO),” Rev. Fordjour stated.
According to the Minority, the MP, who is also a lawyer, was leaving the High Court after representing a detained client when the incident occurred. He was reportedly on his way to Parliament to participate in strategy sessions for the current recall. Rev. Fordjour noted that the MP is a key signature to the request that brought the House together and a central figure in shaping the Minority’s strategy.
The Minority questioned the legality of the operation, stating that Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin was never notified of the intended arrest of a sitting MP.
Rev. Fordjour argued that while no individual is above the law, the actions of the security agency undermined the rule of law.
“No person, including an MP, is above the law, but it offends every notion of the rule of law for a security office order to do violence to the Constitution under the guise of investigating a matter,” he said.
He further raised concerns about the safety of legal practitioners, suggesting that if officers could attempt to arrest a lawyer at the doorstep of a courtroom immediately after he had argued a case, then no lawyer is safe in the country.
The Minority indicated that the matter would be raised on the floor of the House. Despite the gravity of the allegation, Rev. Fordjour emphasized that the Minority does not view the issue as a partisan matter but rather as a constitutional one.
“We will raise this on the floor of the house… To the majority, this is not a partisan matter,” he concluded.
