Embattled Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Ohene Kwame Frimpong remains in custody in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, after efforts by Ghanaian parliamentary leadership to secure his bail proved unsuccessful, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has confirmed.
Speaking to the press, Dafeamekpor disclosed that the lawmaker is still being held under the same circumstances as before, and that the substantive extradition hearing is scheduled for November 18.
“We’ve failed to secure a bail for Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong; he remains in custody in Amsterdam,” Dafeamekpor said. “The extradition hearing proper is on the 18th of this month — 18th November. So we’re still before the court. Pray for us that the hearing goes well. And he comes to continue with his work.”
The Chief Whip moved to dispel mounting speculation that the MP had already been handed over to United States authorities, stressing that Frimpong has not been extradited and is still subject to the judicial process in the Netherlands.
“He is not yet extradited to the US, as is being alleged — no. He is still in the Netherlands going through the judicial process,” Dafeamekpor clarified. “If it ends and there is a benefit, you will be briefed on the benefit.”
The case has drawn significant attention in Ghana, with the MP’s detention raising questions about his parliamentary duties and representation of his constituents in the Asante Akyem North constituency. It remains unclear precisely what charges underpin the US extradition request, and Ghanaian officials have yet to comment publicly on the specifics of the case.
Dafeamekpor’s appeal for prayers suggests the parliamentary leadership is pinning its hopes on the November 18 hearing, which will determine whether the extradition proceedings against the MP will proceed. Until then, Frimpong is expected to remain in Dutch custody, unable to return to Ghana or participate in parliamentary business.
The Majority Chief Whip indicated that further updates would be provided once the court process concludes, urging the public to disregard claims that the MP has already been transferred to the United States.
