Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has categorically denied any mismanagement of funds from the government’s World Cup raffle, declaring that the money remains untouched and is being held by the fundraising committee. He also dismissed allegations involving a foreign WhatsApp number as “a complete lie.”
Speaking of the controversy, Adams emphasized that the raffle funds have not been tampered with at any point. “Every person of the raffle that was run by—has not been touched, that money has not been touched. The fundraising committee is still holding onto those funds to make sure that everybody is appropriately [compensated],” he stated.
The Minister’s remarks come in response to allegations raised by Ranking Member Vincent Ekow Assafuah, including claims referencing a foreign WhatsApp number, which Adams described as entirely fabricated. “If the NPP minority in parliament is running a story and talking about foreign numbers, that’s a complete lie,” he said.
Adams insisted that the winners are well-organized and have been consistently engaged throughout the process. “The winners know they have their leaders and they have been engaged,” he noted, pushing back against suggestions that beneficiaries have been left in the dark or treated unfairly.
Highlighting the success of the initiative, Adams confirmed that five winners successfully secured visas and traveled to the United States of America to attend the World Cup. “Five were successful, they got their visas and traveled to the United States of America and are all back. They participated in every event, they went to watch the games and were back,” he stressed.
The Minister reiterated that winners who could not travel still have options available to them, including attending a future competition or receiving a financial reward. “Those who did not get the opportunity still have the opportunity either to attend a future competition because the record is there, or if they opt for the financial reward they will give them the financial reward,” he concluded.
Adams ended by urging the public to seek the truth and avoid consuming misinformation surrounding the raffle process.
