Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) side of the eight (8th) Parliament let their guards down for Rt. Honorable Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin to be elected as Speaker, for peace to prevail.
According to him the election of the current Speaker is unprecedented and is something their party supporters and those who have followed politics would see as a “no no move”.
“We are not in normal times, this is the best we could have and we are getting ready to get the president elect Nana Akufo-Addo sworn into office”, he said in an interview.
When asked what has been his experience as a first time MP with the drama that surrounded the elections of the Speaker, his Deputies and MPs been sworn in, he noted that it was an interesting moment and the way things played out took everyone by surprise.
“Our friends in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) decided to take advantage of our leniency and we did not have too much of members, and we believed we should have overtures and stretch our arms so that in the spirit of togetherness we could help develop this nation”.
The Akim Oda lawmaker further noted that their side realized that for what their colleagues on the other side are noted for using force to resolve their issues was what was experience from the night of December 6th to 7th of 2021.
And added that by and large, “we are thinking about the Ghanaian people who voted us into office, and not just to be in the chamber arguing just unnecessarily causing agitations, but to ensure that business of the House is done together.”
