Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana Diana Acconcia to help unlock undisbursed funds to Ghana.

According to the Tamale South lawmaker, in one of his foreign trips, at the airport in Brussels, he bought a newspaper and in the headlines he saw “undisbursed EU funds”.

“I was not happy Ghana was listed part, it has nothing to do with the European Union, I think they should unlock those resources. As I left the Employment Ministry, there was a pledge to support the labor market and it should be activated”

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu further revealed that the EU remains a strong body that plays an important role with the Republic of Ghana, but there are outstanding issues that the Ambassador should help the Executive arm of government achieve its objectives.

“I know that, 2014 to 2020 under the Ghana indicative program with the EU, three hundred and twenty-three million Euro is suppose to support issue of accountability and public sector management employment and other related issues, there are slow disbursement of funds”.

He further pointed out that as he speaks for Parliament, it is important for those resources to be made available, so that some of the interventions of government could be worked on.

On this issue of accountability, “Parliament is the best institution in terms of capacity to promote transparency and accountability as Ghana seeks to deepen collaboration and cooperation with the EU”.

The Minority Leader expressed joy seeing the Ambassador of the EU to Ghana,  Diana Acconcia in Yendi exchanging pleasantry with the Ghanaian President, “it means you are following through with matters to do with peace and security of Ghana and not only interested in the national capital”.
