The Minority Leader has backtracked on claims of widespread irregularities in the ongoing recruitment drive for the police, fire, and immigration services, avoiding a potential appearance before the Privileges Committee.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has officially withdrawn allegations of irregularities in the government’s recruitment into the security services, just a day after being referred to Parliament’s Privileges Committee.
The reversal on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, comes after the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, referred him to the committee on Tuesday following a formal complaint by the Interior Minister.
The Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, invoked Standing Order 34 to raise a point of order, accusing the Minority Leader of potentially holding Parliament in contempt. Mr. Mubarak took issue with comments made by Mr. Afenyo-Markin during his response to the State of the Nation Address.
The Interior Minister argued that the Minority Leader’s claims were unfounded and designed to discredit a legitimate state process.
“He said [the process] has been tainted with scam and irregularities,” the Minister told the House. “These allegations are false and do not have any factual basis. They are intended to undermine a genuine process that is ongoing.”
