The Member of Parliament for Atiwa West Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwesi Amoako-Atta has advised assembly members and other leaders in the area against aiding people who engage in illegal mining commonly known as “galamsey”.

According to him, the devastating effect of illegal mining on the environment and social life of the people is huge hence the need for proper regulation of these activities. He warned individuals who connive with others especially foreigners to carry out galamsey to desist from it since the law may catch up with them.

The Member of Parliament who was addressing assembly members of the Atiwa District during the election of new Presiding Member also reminded citizens who want to engage in small scale mining to get proper approval from the right institutions. According to him, parliament is initiating moves to assist in flushing out those involved in the illegal mining operations to bring sanity to the sector.

District Chief Executive of the assembly, Emmanuel Atta Twum also advised the assembly members to use their good office to safe guard the environment by helping security agencies and the assembly to clamp down on galamsey.
