Ranking member on the Committee of Health Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has revealed that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government gave financial clearance to about fifteen thousand two hundred nurses last year.

According to him out of that number about eight thousand nurses were recruited and were receiving their salaries for which more nurses were expected to be employed because there were enough funds made available for that.

At a press conference Dr. Ayew further explained that the clearance expired in December last year and all the Health Minister needed to do was to write for an extension of the financial clearance so as to be able to use the remaining funds to pay nurses who were not paid.

And supported his commitment with a Ministry of Finance document he shared with members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC).

In addition, he noted that government was throwing dust into the eyes of the people with the comments of the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh claiming that, he has submitted a letter to cabinet for approval to raise funds to pay nurses was a mere political talk.

“They are in a mess and they have seen ten months have caught up with them, we are a reasonable minority; you remember when the nurses went on strike, and on the guidelines of leadership and the committee, we resolved that it was too early, we have to support government that was because government is continues. We asked the nurses to understand government a bit and go back to negotiate and the nurses saw the need to go back to work”.

He asserts that the Minority has become nonpolitical with the health issues; “but they are doing us in; they did that same thing in 2020 the nurses went on strike for three weeks then in opposition the NDC supported the nurses. They should learn from us, we have said it is too early; we extended the goodwill because of Ghanaians whose lives would be lost. When the nurses issues are addressed, what would happen to the lives that would have been lost.
