President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray has appealed to lawmakers in the sub-regional parliament to intervene in to ensure utility companies within the bloc meet their financial obligation to the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
Dr. Touray raised this matter of concern when he went before the House to present the 2025 annual report of the state of the Community at the Parliament’s Ordinary Session in Abuja, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is made up of public and private generation, transmission, and distribution companies operating within 14 of the 15 member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to Dr Touray, the West African Power Pool holds considerable promise for the sub-region and as he addressed the House, fourteen (14) member states have been interconnected. The objective is to ensure we all have access to affordable and reliable energy particularly electricity.
“WAPP has approached, ECOWAS Commission for financial support in paying, basic things like salaries but we know our utility companies in our various states ensure that we pay up front before we enjoy electricity?”
Dr. Touray further added that, with these prepaid facilities therefore their obligation should be honored and as representatives of the people, he thought it wise to bring this to their attention, indicating that this was already brought to the attention of the sub-regional leaders last year.
“As representatives of the people, I think I should bring this to your attention so that in your respective countries you carry this information to them because this is very important to all of us in the sub-region.”
