Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, following her victory in a hotly contested rerun election.

The swearing-in ceremony, held in Parliament on Tuesday, was administered by Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. However, the occasion was marked by political tension as members of the Minority Caucus staged a walkout in protest.

Their action followed the Speaker’s decision to deny a request by Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh, to make a statement before the swearing-in.

Aubynn’s induction into Parliament comes after a rerun of the December 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency. The Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the original results in 19 polling stations due to what it described as ‘widespread irregularities,’ including unsigned pink sheets, tally discrepancies, and breaches in collation procedures.

In the rerun conducted earlier this month, Aubynn narrowly defeated her closest contender, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, polling 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881.

Her victory represents a significant win for the NDC in a constituency long considered a stronghold of the NPP. It also boosts the party’s presence in Parliament, giving the NDC a critical two-thirds majority—a milestone that Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga says positions the party to implement key constitutional reforms.

Aubynn’s swearing-in not only resolves a months-long electoral impasse in Ablekuma North but also reshapes the political balance in the current Parliament.
