The Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North Elizabeth Sackey, has emphasized the need for building inspectors of the various District Assemblies across the country who shirk their responsibility to be punished to serve as a deterrent to other such officials.

She said such dereliction of duty on the part of such officials of the assemblies has resulted in sub-standard buildings collapsing and in the process causing needless deaths and robbing the country of its otherwise good human resource.

The MP was speaking following the collapse of the multi-storey building that housed the Achimota branch of the Melcom shop which in its wake resulted in the death of about six people while dozens of victims were rescued from the debris.

Hon. Elizabeth Sackey who is the MP for the area felt very disheartened and sympathized with the families of the victims of the tragedy that happened, adding that this could have been avoided if officials did their work efficiently.

She stated that her checks indicate the collapsed building did not a building the permit and was surprised as to how the building was allowed to stand when indeed it should not have.

Hon. Sackey noted that it was important for developers of such properties to obtain building permit and for the assemblies to constantly monitor the building of such structures so that defects can be detected before it claims innocent lives.

She vowed to pursue the unfortunate incident and ensure that the culprits are brought to book as such carelessness on the part of state officials would not be countenanced.
