Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has revealed that despite the National Democratic Congress (NDC) having overwhelming Majority, President John Dramani Mahama has not attempted to influence what goes on, on the floor of the House
According to him same applies to the former President Nana Akuffo Addo during his term as president.
He further added that they both know he as Speaker would not succumb to any pressure from the executive arm of government. “Ones I say this is it; that is what I go by”.
Speaking on the issue of ratio during the Speaker’s encounter with editors on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, he said he has rejected the proposal to allow more majority MPs to speak during debates to the detriment of the Minority because of the numerical differences between the two caucuses adding that that will not be fair to deepening democracy.
He assets hat multi-party democracy is about the opposition; adding that it is only when the Minority holds the base that things go well. “You can have a majority but do not use your majority to oppress the minority”.
He insisted that the popular saying that “the Minority would have their say, but the Majority would have their way should be done away with; instead we should be looking at the national interest.
