Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says Ghana will count on India and other BRICS members to support its interest in joining the grouping.

Mr. Ablakwa said the decision is driven by the need to advance an agenda that frees developing countries from conditionalities imposed by a few international institutions.

He disclosed that Ghana will take formal steps to apply for BRICS membership, a process that requires acceptance and admission by existing members.

“We have very excellent relations with all the founding members – Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa – and all the new partners – UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran. They all have diplomatic missions here and we know we can count on them for support,” Mr. Ablakwa said, adding that Ghana is counting particularly on India.

In response, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, confirmed that Mr. Ablakwa had shared Ghana’s interest in joining BRICS with him.

Dr. Jaishankar described BRICS as a gathering of countries with strong independence of thought and a desire for freedom of choice, who come together from very diverse situations to act as a collective.
