President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is moving forward with the ambitious Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, a development set to revolutionize travel between Ghana’s two largest cities.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026, the President outlined the scope of the project, which promises to slash travel time dramatically.

“Mr Speaker, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a 198.7 km, six-lane, high-speed motorway designed to connect Ghana’s two largest cities and is expected to reduce travel time to approximately 2.5 hours,” he stated. “This new alignment, with eight interchanges, will be Ghana’s first true expressway.”

A 50-Year Concession Model

To drive the project forward, the government has established a special purpose vehicle to oversee its delivery.

President Mahama explained that the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, a subsidiary of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has been appointed as the Concessionaire. This entity is mandated to handle the entire lifecycle of the project—design, finance, construction, operation, and maintenance—along with associated facilities.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways will act as the Contracting Authority, with the project structured as a long-term concession of up to 50 years.

What to Expect: A True Expressway
Unlike current road networks, the new expressway is being purpose-built to modern standards. Key features will include:
* Limited Access Points: Designed for high-speed, uninterrupted travel.
* Higher Speed Limits: Allowing for the targeted 2.5-hour journey.
* Modern Safety Infrastructure: Built to improve road safety significantly.

Preparatory activities for the major road construction work are already underway, including feasibility studies, detailed designs, and cost assessments. The project is expected to be a major economic artery, improving mobility, safety, and trade while better connecting communities to markets and essential services.
