The Ghanaian government has engaged a local attorney to represent detained Asante Akyem North MP Kwame Ohene Frimpong following his arrest at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, according to Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Dafeamekpor confirmed that a Ghanaian lawyer qualified to practice in The Hague has been retained to handle the case. “We have committed to this matter very well. We have a lawyer for him now… and he’s dealing with the issues,” he said.

The government’s legal engagement is part of a broader diplomatic response involving the Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana’s Ambassador to The Hague, the Attorney-General, and the Speaker of Parliament. Majority Leader travelled to Amsterdam after being alerted to the Sunday morning arrest.

Dafeamekpor described the incident as “a big headache,” noting that authorities are awaiting authenticated documentation from Dutch prosecutors to confirm the exact grounds for the detention. He urged media caution against speculation and called for calm while legal and diplomatic channels proceed.

On discussions around extradition and diplomatic immunity, Mr. Dafeamekpor noted that such matters were not unprecedented in international law, referencing cases involving former Chilean President Augusto Pinochet and Julian Assange.

“As for extradition, it has even happened to sitting presidents of countries… every lawyer of some repute knows this,” he stated.

The Majority Chief Whip urged the public, all and sundry to remain calm while diplomatic and legal processes continue.
