As the Community Parliament debate the political situation in Guinea Bissau with almost all the lawmakers condemning the purported coup in that country, a member of Ghana’s delegation, Laadi Ayii Ayamba is calling on all institutions that got the results before the vandalizaton should work hand in hand to ensure the results of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections are released.
According to her she is happy that the Chairman of the Committee on Political Affairs, Peace, Security, and African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Senator Edwin M. Snowe Jr. led parliament’s delegation to observe the election and gave account of what happened which also include the fact that they got all the results.
“We are talking of burning and destruction of those results; can they go to all the other places and destroy those results? No. If no why can’t we come up and suggest that there should be a resolution from the Community Parliament to work with other countries and ensure that the results are released. At the end of the day, retrogression is not ours; if there was a mistake at first, it does not mean it cannot be corrected”.
And further suggested that two representatives from Guinea Bissau who were given the opportunity to address the House, they being in Abuja – Nigeria means they have agreed to democracy and have agreed to work as the peoples representative of the Community bloc and “do us good by holding to democracy; and the two of them should rather be united to work towards progress and enable democracy in their country, not one wanting anything like coup under the sun.”
Madam Ayamba in addition noted that she is not surprised with the coup in Guinea Bissau, stating that on two different instances, they did not have a parliament, yet their MPs were sitting in the hallow chamber representing same country.
“We looked on, we decided to massage and manage but where did we think we were heading to? If you teach a child how to walk, you expect the child to be able to run. So that is what has happened; yet we say we should send people there. Same thing happened to the Sahel countries, three gone; it has happened, and we are here lamenting?”
Again, we have been acting in the same manner until it gets to crises before we start talking. Why are we behaving that way? We should not give in when we have the early warning signs, she stated.
Also she suggested that ECOWAS’ stand-by-force should act and ensure democracy returns to Guinea Bissau that will go a long way. “They should not sit in the chamber and allow those who have their selfish interests think they have carried the day in the sub-region; we should not think coup is the best by throwing away democracy.”
On his part another representative from Ghana, Anyimadu Antwi pointed out that the situation in Guinea Bissau is embarrassing having listened to the contribution from his colleagues on the floor, the two representatives from Guinea Bissau should condemn the act of coup.
He added that the two from Bissau claimed they worn their elections, “you did and what happened?”
He recounted Africa’s history with military takeovers, but we have progressed. “The last time Ghana had such a thing was forty-four years ago; since then we have passed on from one government to the other.”
