Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Adwoa Safo is receiving medical treatment after gunmen opened fire on her vehicle Sunday near the residence of her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena.
The shooting occurred on the premises of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena’s residence, where he had been gathering supporters in an effort to position himself as successor to his late father, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo, according to sources.
Police from the Dome District Command responded to the scene after being alerted, and officers were deployed to quell rising tensions, a police source confirmed.
Witnesses said Ms. Safo was in the area when armed men, allegedly acting on orders from Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, fired at her vehicle. About 15 rounds were reportedly discharged, with one bullet grazing the former legislator near her neck. She was rushed to an undisclosed medical facility and is said to be in stable condition, according to family sources.
The incident escalates an already bitter succession battle within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. Several family members have challenged the attempt to install Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the church’s next leader, with the matter now before the courts.
As of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement on the shooting, but investigations are expected to commence to determine the circumstances and identify those responsible.
