Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has urged the two dominant political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to do everything within their means to protect experienced and hardworking MPs.
According to him it was sad that some of his colleagues who are dedicated to workings in the House and the seventh Parliament like Wa West MP, Joseph Yieleh Chireh and Tamale Central MP, Inusah Abdulai B. Fuseini who he consulted on legal matters would not be in the next Parliament.
On the New Patriotic Party side too, there are experienced and hardworking lawmakers who would not be joining us in the 8th Parliament; “it should be a wakeup call for the political parties”, he stated.
He made this remarks on mid-night of December 6, 2021 prior to the dissolution of the seventh Parliament.
Touching on the economy, Mr. Iddrisu pointed out that the economy is in recession but government is not prepared to talk about it. It is quite on it as the Ghanaian economy is struggling, with the spending of twenty-seven billion Ghana cedis into debt servicing, “the only excuse is COVID-19 pandemic”.
He further pointed out that the seventh Parliament passed important legislations like the Special Prosecutor law, law on vigilantism but in the 2020 elections there were people perpetuating violence and it was not enough to pass laws, they need to be activated.
“We have not done enough to punish corruption in Ghana, both political and public servants should be punished”.
