The government is accelerating efforts to make mental healthcare more accessible across the country while intensifying campaigns to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.
Responding to a question in Parliament from the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Mr. Akandoh detailed a comprehensive strategy being implemented by the Mental Health Authority to bridge the gap in services, particularly for rural and underserved communities.
Central to the plan is the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare. “Community Mental Health Officers are being equipped with training, supervision and digital tools to extend services, particularly to rural and underserved communities,” the Minister stated. He also noted the expansion of telepsychiatry and virtual clinics to overcome geographical barriers and address the shortage of specialised personnel.
In a move to decentralise care, psychiatric services are being progressively integrated into regional and selected district hospitals. This is being complemented by a strengthened workforce development programme that includes training, career-development opportunities, and pathways for specialisation in psychiatry and mental health nursing.
On the issue of stigma, Mr. Akandoh highlighted the government’s continued focus on the decriminalisation of attempted suicide, which was achieved in 2023. “Public sensitisation promotes treatment and support rather than punishment,” he explained. Public education is being conducted through traditional and social media, school outreach programmes, and partnerships with faith-based and traditional leaders.
The Authority is also fostering community dialogue and peer support through initiatives such as the National Bereavement Programme, support groups, and digital peer-support platforms. “These interventions are intended to encourage early help-seeking, normalise conversations about mental health and strengthen community support for affected persons and their families,” the Minister added.
