A Minority member on the Appointment Committee, Yaw Patrick Boamah has admonished that Ghanaians should desist from politicking with the nominations of judges to the Supreme and other courts.
Recounting the position the then Minority now Majority took in blocking two of the people appointment to the Supreme Court under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, he assured that the current Minority is not in to politicise President John Mahama’s seven nominees to the Supreme Court.
The seven nominees include, Justice Senyo Dzamefe; Dennis Dominic Adjei; Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh; Philip Bright Mensah; Janapare Adzua Bartels-Kodwo; Hafisata Amaleboba; and Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo.
According to him listening to what some of the Ministers of state are saying about President John Mahama’s seven nominees and juxtaposing it with what was said in the past, one will realize that they have shifted their positions.
Again, there would always be reasons for nominations; some due to retirement, and vacancies. Our position is that we do not politicise nominations, he emphasized.
He admitted that the jurisdiction of the Apex Court is quite wide and they need the judges to execute those mandates.
“We should not politicise the number in the court but look at the work load of the Court; hence the reason why the CJ at the time made some applications to the then President Nana Addo to increase the numbers. Here we are, we would do what we have to do as members of the Committee and present the right report.
This is not the first time we are vetting justices of the Supreme Court so normal questions to test and few developments of the law and around the world”
We are going to cooperate with them; we have always been a cooperative Minority despite what they did to us when we were in the Majority. We have raised issues when necessary; we have boycotted when necessary all within the ambit of Parliamentary practice – we respect the justices, I have not had any indication from leadership that we are boycotting, he stated
