The Rt. Hon Speaker Alban Bagbin has admonished both sides of the House to accept each other and work together on the floor despite their different political ideology to promote democracy.
He affirmed that Ghanaians voted for them on the ticket of their political parties for a reason, and that must be build upon to develop the nation.
“And that’s why Ghanaians voted for you the way they voted. So please, let’s accept each other and work together. You only do that when you are outside the floor. But when you come here, something else happens to you. That is the reason why I want to call on pastors and apostles to come to the floor of the House and then pray and bless the chamber. Maybe there’s something inside here that I don’t know and pastors should come and cast out the evil spirits in the chamber”, he stated jovially.
The Speaker emphasized that he knows the capacity of the leaders and how they relate cordially outside the chamber, but things get bad just when they are on the floor.
I know your capacity, I know who you are, I know what you’ve been doing. But don’t give this impression because it will not be my nature to be applying the hammer. But if that is the last resort, so be it. And I told you sooner than later, it will fall on heads; I won’t split your heads, but you may not recover”.
In recent times, the working relationship between the two leaders of the House, the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin seem strained,
And the Speaker thought it wise to draw the attention of the House to work on it.
The Speaker expressed worry about the posture of both leaders on the floor as each tries to exert their position and control of the House.
While the Majority Leader sees his side as being a super majority, for which reason the Minority side should not be allowed to dictate how things are done on the floor of the House, the Minority leader also believes the Majority should not take their side for granted.
