After the hue and cry in the afternoon of Thursday, May 29, 2025, over the continues detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, serenity finally returned to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The Minority in Parliament that led the protest at the EOCO headquarters having staged a walk-out from the chamber with a threat to spend the night at EOCO until their chairman is given his freedom failed to keep to their promise.
The Caucus joined by other party members staged a sit-in protest demanding the variation to the bail requirements which they described as outrageous and meant to keep Chairman Wontumi in custody.
The Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the protest urged EOCO to conduct its mandates within the confines of the law, while affirming their resolve to the rule of law.
Gradually into the night, the chaos and crowd that besieged the place gradually disappeared still without Chairman Wontumi being able to meet his bail requirements of GHC50 million with two sureties.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that “Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering)”.
The criminal investigation, he said is running concurrently with asset recovery processes – to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime.
“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a lager international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations”.
