Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, alongside Multimedia Group Limited. The legal action, initiated at the High Court, seeks GH¢15 million in damages over remarks made during a widely aired television broadcast that the Effutu MP alleges have severely tarnished his personal and professional standing.
The contentious comments were reportedly made by Mr. Gyamfi during the August 22, 2026, edition of Newsfile, a current affairs programme hosted by Samson Lardy Anyenini on Multimedia’s platforms. According to the writ of summons, Mr. Gyamfi directly referred to the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” during the show—a label Mr. Afenyo-Markin vehemently contests as both false and malicious.
In his statement of claim, the plaintiff argues that the accusation was not a casual insult but carried damaging implications for his career. He contends that the words were reasonably understood to mean that he habitually engages in extortion, abuses the influence of his parliamentary office, and improperly pressures public institutions for personal gain. He insists that such a portrayal has exposed him to public contempt, ridicule, and widespread hatred among his constituents and peers.
Beyond the GH¢15 million in compensation, Mr. Afenyo-Markin is seeking a suite of court-ordered remedies to restore his reputation. These include general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, as well as a perpetual injunction to prevent the defendants from repeating the alleged defamatory statements. He is also demanding that the court compel Mr. Gyamfi and Multimedia to issue a full, unconditional retraction and a public apology, with the directive that both must be given the same level of prominence and audience reach as the original broadcast.
The lawsuit is the latest flashpoint in an ongoing public feud between the two figures, centered on Ghana’s domestic gold purchasing programme. While the writ does not detail the specific gold-policy debate that sparked the exchange, the legal battle now shifts the dispute from the airwaves to the courtroom, with the Minority Leader also pursuing legal costs and expenses alongside the substantial monetary claim.
