The Minority has staged a walkout of Parliament over what they described as “insensitive Ayariga who wants immediate bye-election in Akwatia”.
Jerry Ahmed, Deputy Minority Whip pointed out that the Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga’s comments were insensitive as he tried to push for a bye-election in Akwatia less than two weeks into the demise of their late colleague Ernest Kumi.
According to the second deputy minority whip who addressed the media in Parliament just after their walkout; “of all days, the Majority Leader chose to remind them of the very devastating news they had on July 7, 2025.”
“He has turned himself into an electoral commissioner; he made this submission on the floor and the Speaker ruled him out, he still did not see the incentive nature of his comment”, he stated.
He recounted that the late MP fought through difficult moments into Parliament, yet all the Majority Leader is thinking about is an election. “It is very sad, we are here and wondering if we even have friends.”
“Do we have colleagues, does he think about any body’s health, does he think about the family of the late Kumi? It does not matter to him, we were thinking we care about each other – today the majority leader has shown us that each one for him or herself”.
“We are crying, thinking and mourning; but majority leader has come to tell us that NPP has posters already there, when in fact in truth that is not the case. We are lost for words, and we need to understand this walkout is not in disrespect to the Speaker”.
He expressed regret that even though the Speaker tried to direct him on the way to handle the situation, he insisted and continued with the same tangent. “We are calling on you to call on the majority to stop from being insensitive”.
