The vetting of the Chief Justice Nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is currently taking place without the Minority side of the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The Minority side of the committee staged a walkout just after the Minority Leader and Ranking Member on the Committee presented his preliminary statement at the start of the vetting.
The start of the vetting process witnessed some serious exchanges between the two sides following the Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s decision to make a preliminary statement which the Majority felt contains issues that the Speaker has already ruled on the floor of the House.
This led to the suspension of vetting for some time before the Committee eventually reconvened. Upon return, the Ranking of the Committee stated that his side cannot take part in proceedings that may be denying the former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo of her rights.
“We, the Minority Caucus, hereby vote M bloc to reject the nominee,” he declared.
“We would want to state on record that the Majority can proceed with the questions. We do not intend to proceed with any question,” he added.
“We are, however, registering in the strongest terms that we reject the nomination, and the records should reflect that the report of this committee will be a Majority report,” he stressed.
He affirmed that their decision was grounded in legal concerns and added that they don’t need to vet a nominee before they vote against the nominee.
“We cannot be part of a process that would give rights to one and deny another of her bona fides as enshrined in the Constitution,” he added.
