The Member of Parliament (MP) for Techiman South Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region, Hon. Henry Yiadom Boakye has donated 55 packets of roofing sheets worth GHC17, 050.00 to support rainstorm affected victims who had their roofs ripped off recently in the Municipality.
On the 24th of April, 2017, a rainstorm swept across various communities of Techiman Municipality. This left in its trail considerable damage to the roofs of residential houses as well as state and private schools.
The communities affected were Ahenbronoso, Dwomor, Hausa line and Abourso. A total of thirty-six (36) houses had their roofs or parts of their roofs ripped off and one hundred and ninety-five (195) persons affected.
Two state schools and two private schools had their roofs ripped off and/or walls collapse. 88 houses also had their roofs damaged and an estimated cost of GH?9000 was recorded for properties destroyed.
Hon Henry Yiadom Boakye in his speech to hand over the roofing sheets to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for distribution to the affected persons said he had visited some of the affected communities with NADMO to assess the situation for himself.
He said the donation was part of his support to some of the affected persons to temporary accommodate themselves and their families. He called on well-meaning Ghanaians and the civil society organizations to come to the aid of the victims.
Mr. Labib Jibreel Kesse the NADMO Coordinator for Techiman commended the MP for the donation. He said some of the affected persons have started re-roofing their homes and the support was a relief to those who were seriously affected. He blamed poor roofing, poor building, inadequate building materials, and the use of poor quality building materials and lack of technical knowledge on the part of local artisans to the causes of such a disaster.
In another development, the newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Techiman, Mr. John Donyina paid a maiden visit to the Techiman Municipal Assembly to interact with management of the Assembly prior to his confirmation scheduled on 15th May, 2017.
He pledged to unity among the Assembly members and Management to promote the interest of Techiman. He also gave assurance that during his tenure of office as MCE for Techiman, he will promote Techiman from Municipal to Metropolitan status..
Mr. John Donyina noted that Techiman is a commercial town and that attention will be given to all sectors such as agricultural, the market and education among others. He said Techiman has the comparative advantage to support the agricultural sector and also cooperate with extension officers in educating farmers on up to date ways and means of modern farming techniques. He assured that government policies of the one district, one factory, free SHS, to increase enrollment and improving on the roads and lighting system of the Techiman Municipality would implemented.
Mr. I. K. Acheampong Municipal Co-ordinating Director (MCD) for the Techiman Municipal Assembly assured the MCE nominee of unity, hard work and co-operation among his staff.
