The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained the Ayawaso East seat, with its candidate Baba Jamal winning Tuesday’s by-election by a significant margin.

The election was necessitated by the passing of the constituency’s lawmaker, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

According to official results, Jamal secured a commanding 10,884 votes. His closest challenger, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,009 votes. Three other candidates split the remaining votes: Mohammed Umar Sanda (Independent) took 1,885, Kanor David polled 104, and Ibrahim Idrissu received 43. The Electoral Commission confirmed that out of a total of 17,048 votes cast, 120 were invalid.

The victory marks a return to parliamentary duty for Jamal, who previously served as MP for Akwatia and later as High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The outcome was widely anticipated after pre-election forecasts by Global InfoAnalytics predicted a comfortable win for the NDC. While voting was largely peaceful, electoral officers noted a generally low turnout across the constituency. The MP-elect is set to be sworn into office in the coming days.
