The Ranking member on the Committee of energy in Ghana’s Parliament, George Kwame Aboagye has taken a swipe at the John Dramani Mahama led government for clandestinely introducing one Ghana cedis on a litter of petroleum products.
According to him since the levy was sneaked in and passed, the Minority has embarked on a lot of activities to draw the attention of Ghanaians, “and we have observed that the Government does not intend to listen and they are updating Ghanaians on it and their next steps at a press conference on Monday, 09 June 2025”.
“They have imposed the same levy they sworn to Ghanaians they would not. In opposition they promised not to impose levy on the inefficiency in the energy sector and this was said by Dr. Atto Forson who is the Finance Minister”.
On March 11, 2025 during the presentation of the 2025 budget, the Finance Minister said “we would not impose taxes to pay for the energy sector debt; even NDC activists and civil society are shocked the government has done the very thing it swore heaven and earth it would never do. This is a betrayal of the public trust; this is an act which takes the goodwill of the Ghanaians for granted; the government is operating with the mind set that it has so much goodwill of Ghanaians so it can do anything and get away with it”.
“They can lie to the people and win power, after coming to power stab them in the back, this government knew all the details about the energy sector challenges and made specific promises to Ghanaians about it”.
Again, they tell untruth to Ghanaians that it is just one cedi sacrifices and their explanation to the introduction of the levy is most unacceptable. President John Mahama on May 13, 2025 at African CEOs summit in Abidjan said, “We are using the proceeds from the energy sector levy to pay the areas” and they have promised to finish paying the energy sector debt in December 2026. While announcing this, they never told Ghanaians they were going to introduce this levy, he lamented.
