Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, has debunked assertions that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is engaged in double standards over the nomination of seven new judges to the Supreme Court.
“The issue of accusation that this government is engaging in double standards, I think that is not appropriate. The nominees are before you to vet their suitability and to say that this government engages in double standard is totally inappropriate”, he said in his remarks at the vetting of the Supreme Court nominees.
Throwing light on the two nominees of by the previous government who were rejected, he said, “I was on the appointment committee when the two nominees were rejected. Let me indicate clearly that my side of the House advocated for their rejection that at that time the anticipated retirement of some judges which would have created the vacancy has not taken place. There was no need in anticipation to be appointing replacement; and I also argued that the then president has had the opportunity of appointing so many members to the Supreme Court. And even if some judges were retiring, he should give the opportunity for an incoming president given that we were so close to elections to also have the opportunity to nominate people to the Supreme Court”.
He clarified that the NDC Leader was not the only incoming president, stating that it could have as well been the NPP leader, if he had won. “At that time, that was our argument”. So, for someone to today be accusing this government of double standards in my opinion was not appropriate, he asserted.
