Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members have thronged the Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra amidst to show support to the Member of Parliament for Assin North Kennedy Agyepong amidst heavy security presence

The massive crowds most of whom are clad in red arm bands have been chanting war songs and also demanding the immediate release of the Assin North MP who has been in BNI custody for the last 48 hours.

The firebrand is being tried following his inciting and treasonable comments on radio to the effect that if Gas are beating Ashantes and not allowing Ashantes to register at Odododiodioo in Accra as part of the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise, then Ewes in Ashante region will also be beaten and denied the right to register, and that he was declaring war.

His party the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has distanced itself from the provocative comments by the MP saying it is against ethnic division while several civil society organizations have equally condemned the unsavory remarks.

The MP appeared hale and hearty when he appeared in court in the company of security officers to be tried on the charge of treason.

Kennedy Agyepong’s comment has vehemently been condemned by a cross section of Ghanaians, including religious bodies, civil society organization and other political parties

If convicted found, Hon. Agyapong could face the death penalty.
