A lot of health institutions came under serious criticism at the Public Accounts Committee hearing on Monday for a number of infractions, but more specifically, their seemingly lack of respect to the Auditor-General.

Many of the institutions have failed to implement recommendations by the Auditor-General, and this the Committee believes is borne out of disregard for the Auditor-General and the laws governing their operations.

A similar behaviour from the Tamale Teaching Hospital has compelled the Ranking of the Committee, Samuel Atta Mills who is chairing the hearing to direct management of the hospital to pay 3.7 Million Ghana Cedis to the coffers of the state as recommended by the Auditor-General.

The Chair was appalled that management failed to respond to the
Auditor-General despite being given ample time to act.

The infraction involved unapproved study leave with pay in which 14 staff of the hospital proceeded on study leave with pay in 2022 without approval.

The recommendation by the A-G was for the Chief Executive Officer to ensure the immediate termination of the names on the payroll and to recover the full amount of 3,743,603.44 as unearned salary with interest at the current prevailing Bank of Ghana rate and pay same to the Auditor-Generals Recovery Account, failing which the Chief Executive Officer and the validators should pay the said amount.

And since they failed to implement the recommendation, the Committee directed them to pay.
