Parliament has unanimously approved the nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Ministers for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Environment, Science and Technology respectively.
The approval came after the House adopted the report of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, which was presented by its Chairman and First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor. Members subsequently debated the report before giving their unanimous backing to the two nominees.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin congratulated the duo and urged them to go the extra mile in tackling the challenges facing their respective ministries. He reminded them that their new roles would require balancing their ministerial duties with their responsibilities as Members of Parliament, while also drawing on their previous experience in the House.
“You are going to wear additional hats and that’s not going to be easy. You have to combine your role as a Member of Parliament and as a Minister of State and also even what you are leaving behind here you have to still carry that along,” the Speaker cautioned.
The Speaker singled out Mr Ayariga, noting that his new assignment would be particularly demanding. “And particularly my son, Honourable Mahama Ayariga, you have a very tall mountain to climb,” he said, while assuring both nominees of Parliament’s full support to enable them to deliver on their mandates.
President John Mahama is expected to swear the duo into office as soon as practicable.
