Parliament has adopted the report of the Appointments Committee on the Chief Justice nominee, Justice Baffoe- Bonnie.

Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee in moving the motion for the adoption of the report told the House that the nominee proved his competence and his indepth knowledge about the sector hence parliament should approve his nomination.

“Right Honourable Speaker, by way of recommendation, the Committee recommends to the House, by majority decision, the approval of the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for appointment as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

As expected following events During the vetting process, the approval was preceded by heated debates as the Minority tries to back matters pending before the courts and others that the Speaker had already ruled on

During the process, Deputy Minority whip, Habib …challenged the Speaker’s ruling on the voice vote and called for a headcount which the Minority again lost. A further call for division was challenged by the Majority leader accusing the Minority of abusing the process leading to the Speaker’s ruling in favour of the Majority.

Thus, the House eventually approved the nominee through a headcount of 163 votes in favour and 69 votes against.
