Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has strongly denied authorship of a circulating memorandum alleging she received and returned GH¢70,000 in connection with the recent vetting of ministerial and Supreme Court nominees, describing the document as fake and a calculated ploy to sow discord within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Ms. Appiagyei categorically refuted claims that she had written to the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, admitting to receiving the cash payment related to her duties on the Appointments Committee.
“I did not write, authorise, or circulate this document. It is fake and should be disregarded by all,” she declared. “I state expressly and without qualification that I did not receive any payment of GH¢70,000, or any other sum, from any person in connection with the vetting of ministerial or Supreme Court nominees, or in connection with my duties as a member of the Appointments Committee.”
The Deputy Minority Leader further dismissed the allegation that she had returned the money, noting that since she never received any payment, she had “no occasion to return any such payment, contrary to what the fake document suggests.”
Funeral Attendance and Initial Response
Ms. Appiagyei revealed that she was attending the funeral of a close friend when her attention was first drawn to the fabricated story. She noted that she initially assumed a “FAKE” stamp—which she had authorized to be placed on the document—would be sufficient to contain the misinformation. However, she acknowledged that the narrative subsequently assumed full prominence in the media, prompting her to issue a robust rebuttal.
She insisted that she has at all times discharged her duties on the Appointments Committee, including during the recent high-profile vetting sessions, with the utmost integrity.
Legal Action Planned
Describing the fabrication as a “serious matter,” Ms. Appiagyei announced that she is currently taking legal advice on the appropriate next steps once the source of the document is established. She emphasized that she reserves all her rights in that regard, including legal action against any person found responsible for the fabrication or the knowing circulation of the fraudulent memorandum.
Political Reassurance
Dismissing the episode as the work of “faceless individuals” seeking to disrupt party unity, the Deputy Minority Leader moved to reassure party faithful and the broader public.
“Though we walk through these difficult times, I wish to assure the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party and all Ghanaians that the Caucus stand united to rally behind our flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for victory 2028,” she stated.
