The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced plans to convert Terminal 2 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) into a multipurpose terminal. This will be achieved by constructing a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3.
The Minister explained that the project aims to alleviate chronic overcrowding in Terminal 3 during peak hours, which often causes passenger discomfort, while Terminal 2 remains underutilized.
Mr. Nikpe disclosed the plans when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Wednesday, alongside officials from the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), including Managing Director Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare.
He stated that upon completion, the redesigned Terminal 2 will serve both domestic and international passengers, improving comfort and easing congestion throughout KIA.
Mr. Nikpe described the initiative as a high-priority government project scheduled for implementation this year.
“We experience a lot of congestion in the evening at Terminal 3, while Terminal 2 is not as busy during peak hours,” the Minister said. “The plan is to build a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 to facilitate the movement of international passengers, effectively sharing the load between the two terminals.”
“It is a high-priority government project designed to enhance comfort for our passengers. Terminal 2 will thus become a multipurpose facility for both domestic and international travel,” he added.
